How to Read Codes for Harley-Davidson Models

Harley-Davidson model codes provide an easy way to categorize bikes based on the engine, fork, and frame. You can usually find the code on the breather or the front fender, although it may be located someplace else on bikes with aftermarket alterations.

Here’s how to interpret each letter of a Harley-Davidson model code:

First Letter: Engine Series
G — Servicar three-wheeler (manufactured from 1937 to 1972)
E — Overhead valve 61 cubic inches “Big Twin” (separate engine and transmission)
F — Overhead valve “Big Twin”
K — Side valves 45 and 55 cubic inch
U — Side valve “Big Twin”
V — Side valve 74 cubic inches (manufactured 1930 to 1936)
W — Side valve 45 cubic inches (manufactured 1937 to 1952
X — Sports and Special Construction
V — Revolution Motor
Second Letter: Front End Size
L — Wide front tire and Hydra-Glide style front forks
X — Narrow Tire and Sport Forks
Note: This excludes Sportster and V-Rod models

Third Letter: Frame Style
H/T — Highway/Touring Frame
ST — Softail Frame
D — Dyna Frame

If any letters follow the third, they indicate specific features within a bike family.
